At the end of another year I am grateful that you continue to help Columban missionaries to be present with people in many situations. Your hope-filled donations and spiritual support are significant. You are a friend to victims of earthquakes, floods, war, political turmoil and crushing poverty.
I am convinced that mission is a movement of friendship. It runs with a strong sense of everyone belonging together in God’s creation. It is not a dramatic effort to save souls, nor always motivated to solve problems. The mission spirit flows with a desire to appreciate the lives of people. There is a constant buzz in mission circles about the possibilities.
Christmas reminds us that religion brings us to a close relationship with the world. The church is not for onlookers but participants. Through mission we take nothing for granted. We mirror the concern of Jesus actively working towards responsible care for the poor of the world. We reveal the meaning and significance of Christ in ways that often get overlooked.
Be assured that lives have been improved and enriched by the generous efforts of compassionate friends like you. Our task together is to take the New Zealand church out beyond itself. Remember that we are involved in a dialogue with all cultures and traditions. In 2012 we shall continue to spread good news to others, and allow fresh movements to enrich the home church.
On behalf of Columban missionaries elsewhere I extend thanks to all our supporters and volunteers who help keep mission alive. I am grateful for the ways you support The Far East magazine and the Columban Calendar. I share a word of thanks also with those who leave a legacy for the future of mission. Bequests are now a vital component of mission support.
Every blessing at Christmas and into 2012.
Fr Michael Gormly SSC is presently at St Columbans, Lower Hutt, New Zealand.
