Our Formation
The Columban Formation program extends over several years and includes:
- Initial Studies: Living at the Columban Formation house in Sydney, NSW, you will do full-time study of cultural, philosophical and missiological subjects, and enter into formal spiritual training. Depending on your educational qualifications this will normally be for a couple of years. You will also have opportunities for social and pastoral involvement.
- Spiritual Year: This is a one-year program of intensive spiritual formation. It is normally done with other English-speaking Columban students in another country. It will be scheduled either before or very early in the theologate (see below).
- Columban International Theologate: Along with all Columban students from other countries you will do a degree course at Chicago Theological Union in the USA. Besides the regular biblical and theological subjects required for ordination you will also research the contemporary challenges of mission. You will also engage in pastoral work in the migrant and disadvantaged sectors of Chicago city.
- First Missionary Assignment (FMA): This is practical overseas missionary experience for a period of two years. You will be assigned to another country to live and work alongside other Columbans. You will learn the local language, familiarize yourself with the history and culture of the people, and engage in practical pastoral involvement.
- Columban International Theologate: Return to the Columban International Theologate to continue your formation and to complete your academic degree, building on your experience and learning during FMA.
- Final Studies: Return to Sydney for final preparation for ordination, which will take place in your home diocese among family and friends, after which you will take up your mission assignment.
