THE Far East magazine was aimed not only at adults but also at children. In the early editions, half of the magazine was devoted to them in order to develop a lifelong interest in the missions. Children were invited to send their photographs and their letters to "Maureen" at The Far East. Maureen appeared in the first edition of The Far East with a column Our Little Missionaries. The early Columbans especially Frs Galvin and Maguire were marvellous at using the modern media of the time. For example, Fr Maguire began publishing The Far East within eight months of arriving. He also introduced the Columban Calendar and the Mite box. These are fundraising methods still relevant today. |
