A Sacred Domain

When a pilgrim, tourist or scholar approaches the cultural, spiritual and linguistic domain of another people, the experience invariably evokes a sense of respect, then wonder. My missionary journey into Maori spirituality opened me to a sacred world. I discovered that the goal of every life is to be endowed with a deep sense of the sacred - tapu. The spiritual power, prestige and influence which proceeds from tapu is mana. A rich and ageless heritage relates to these concepts. They are decisive aspects in Maoridom when something is to be done, or not done; how matters are to be processed in a community; who merits respect and honour; and who carries dignity and leadership. Here too we enter a sacred domain where the creating and sustaining God (Te Atua) is acknowledged. Here the spirits of the ancestors (te atua) are present and people seek their place of belonging. The unity, harmony and identity of a family, tribe and people is affirmed in tikanga - the culture. A point of interest with religious consequences is the manner in which tapu emphasises integrity of creation. Relatedness to all of creation is not taken for granted. Credit is given to all sources of life, extending from the stuff of Earth, to the trees of the forest, the animals, birds and fish, through to human beings, linked in generation after generation. Nothing in life is presumed. A constant effort is made to preserve and promote harmony by addressing tapu and recognising mana. Real harmony is established in the space where the human person can stand with dignity and acceptance. A sacred balance is established between people and their environment, between communities and their ancestors. Here I discovered sources of imagery to nurture my faith and cultural awareness. I found support in ritual and prayer, oratory, song, hospitality and celebration. A cohesive and integrated world-view emerges with the potential to motivate the human spirit in fresh ways.
