Catholic religious urge for climate justice

Catholic Religious Australia has written to the Government expressing grave concerns about current plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, which they highlight is inconsistent with findings of United Nations climate change reports. As a member of CRA, St Columbans Mission Society endorses these concerns.

In a letter to the Government, Catholic Religious Australia states climate change is “the most important challenge of our time.” Climate change is impacting the very lives and health of people and the planet today and is an issue of inter-generational justice.

The findings of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report states there is a narrow window of opportunity to act. At the launch event of the latest climate change report, Inger Anderson, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program said: “Half measures will not halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Increased action must begin this year, not next year, this month, not next month and indeed today, not tomorrow. Otherwise, we will continue to sleepwalk into a climate catastrophe.” CRA urge Australia to act with “greater urgency and with greater global solidarity. Australian people are more than ready to rise to the occasion.”
