World Day of Prayer for Peace

Pope Francis has called for a day of prayer, fasting and penance on Friday 27th October, for peace in the Holy Land and around the world.

Casualties in Gaza are rising and the humanitarian crisis is desperate. “Our thoughts go to Palestine and Israel,” said Pope Francis in his general audience this week, amidst concerns the conflict will spread.

Appealing for peace, Pope Francis said, “War does not solve any problems, it only sows death and destruction. It increases hatred and multiplies revenge. War erases the future. Silence the weapons. Listen to the cry of the poor, the people, the children, for peace.” Pope Francis urged all people of faith to take “just one side in this conflict: that of peace. But not with words, with prayer, with total dedication.”

An hour of prayer in St Peter's from 6 pm Rome time on Friday 27th October will be devoted to petitions for peace in the Holy Land and places of ongoing conflict around the world. Local churches are invited to organise similar initiatives.  He invited all people of faith and those who advocate for peace to participate in the day of reflection as they see fit.
