On Thursday September 30, 2010, at Mary MacKIllop Place North Sydney the Perth Mint had launched by Sister Anne Derwin Congregational Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph, gold and silver commemorative coins.
Ahead of Mary MacKillop's canonisation in Rome on October 17, the Perth Mint is issuing 2010 gold coins and 7500 silver coins to mark the occasion. The number of gold coins will be deliberately restricted to 2010 to recognise the year in which Blessed Mary will become Saint Mary MacKillop.
Around 500 people attended the launch including Perth Mint chief executive Ed Harbuz, many Sisters of St Joseph and Cardinal George Pell.
Mary MacKillop would have been delighted to see and hear the children from St Paul's School Dulwich Hill sing with Gary Pinto - they were delightful and brought a sense of wonder to the launch.
The coins can be ordered through Mary MacKillop Place Gift Shop or Australia Post offices and through the Perth Mint website. The gold coin will cost $275 and the silver coin will cost $89.50.
