Columban Mission Institute (CMI) has closed but Mission continues

CMI Celebration Faye and Fr Noel

The Columban Mission Institute and its three Centres closed on 10th October 2017 but Columban mission will continue.  It is the end of an era, of one way of being on mission; but it is not the end of the Columbans, and certainly not the end of mission.

A celebration was held in Sydney on the 23rd of September to remember, to give thanks and to celebrate the many achievements of the Columban Mission Institute over the years.  The Superior General, Fr Kevin O’Neill, offered a Eucharist of Thanksgiving for the benefactors, friends, supporters and collaborators of the Columban Mission Institute who made that work possible.

  • The Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations has moved to a new office in the Institute for Mission in Blacktown in the Diocese of Parramatta. Fr Patrick McInerney and Ms Jane Favotto have already settled in.

  •  The Centre for Mission Studies is closing, but Frs Noel Connolly and Patrick McInerney will continue to offer courses in mission-related topics at the Catholic Institute of Sydney and the Broken Bay Institute - The Australian Institute of Theological Education.  Fr Noel will also promote mission through talks and programs with Catholic Mission and through articles in Columban and other media.   Fr Brian Vale will continue to be involved in short courses on acculturation at St Joseph’s in Baulkham Hills.
  • The Centre for Peace, Ecology and Justice is closing, but some of its pioneering programs will be continued by other agencies.  The Culture of Peace (CoP) Formation Program will be continued by Catholic Mission.  The Faith Ecology Network (FEN) will be facilitated by Australian Catholic University.  Fr Peter O’Neill is the newly-appointed Columban Peace, Ecology and Justice Coordinator and will operate from an office at the Columban Mission Centre in Essendon.

The staff of the Columban Mission Institute want to stay in touch with you, so our current telephone numbers and e-mails will be re-directed to the appropriate Columban house, office or individual until we are re-established in our new locations.

We wish to thank all who have contributed to mission over the past many years: the benefactors who supported us, the partners and collaborators who cooperated with us, the students and teachers who availed of our courses, and the many people who contributed time and talent to our various programs, publications and resources, who prayed for us, who inspired us and were inspired by us, who encouraged us, who journeyed with us.

Fr Patrick McInerney is the Director of the Columban Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations.
