From 27 April 27 to 1 May, the Columbans from Oceania – priests, Lay Missionaries, and lay co-workers - gathered together in person for a truly special and inspiring time of prayer, reflection, and planning as we looked ahead to the next five years of mission in our region. Nearly 40 people attended, and everyone – priests and laity – shared the same spirit of unity, dedication, and commitment to God’s mission.

It was historic, the first-ever face-to-face meeting of all Columbans in the Region of Oceania, which includes Aotearoa-New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji. It was prophetic. Priests and laity had equal voice. It was synodal. We listened deeply to each other and to the Holy Spirit, modelling what Pope Francis called the church to be, a community of missionary disciples.

The gathering was much more than meetings and discussions. It was a joyful reminder of the strength of our Columban community and the deep faith that guides our work. Over these days, we prayed together, listened deeply, shared ideas, and planned carefully for the future. We reflected on how we can continue responding to God’s call in Oceania with courage, compassion, and renewed purpose.

We faced the challenges of our increasing age and smaller numbers. We discerned new and creative ways of engaging in mission in these very different times. We looked to make our structures more inclusive and participative, incorporating laity into leadership and decision-making. We looked to deepen relationships, partnerships, and collaboration among ourselves and with others. We sought ways to make our missionary presence and endeavours more attuned to the diverse local situations of the 3 countries where we work.

There was something deeply moving about being together - sharing meals, stories, laughter, and prayer. These simple but meaningful moments strengthened our bonds and reminded us that our mission is built not only on strategy but on relationships, faith, and shared service. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we renewed our commitment to serving others, especially those most vulnerable and in need, with justice, love, and hope.

The dedication of every person present was truly inspiring. The passion, hard work, and faithfulness of the Columbans in Oceania were clearly visible throughout the gathering. Each person brought unique gifts and experiences, but all were united by one common purpose: to follow God’s call through Columban mission.

This time together also reminded us that we do not carry this mission alone. We are deeply grateful for our benefactors, whose prayers, generosity, and ongoing support make this work possible. Your partnership strengthens us and allows us to continue serving communities across Oceania with confidence and hope.

As we move forward, we do so encouraged and energised. While the future brings challenges, this gathering affirmed that we are a strong and faithful community, guided by God at every step. With careful planning, shared vision, and trust in God’s providence, we are ready to continue this important mission.

To all our benefactors, thank you for walking alongside us. Your support is not simply financial - it is a profound expression of faith and partnership in God’s mission. Because of you, we can continue bringing Christ’s message of love, justice, and peace to the world.

This gathering was a beautiful sign of hope for the future. Together, with God’s guidance and your continued support, Columban mission in Oceania will continue to grow, serve, and inspire for many years to come.
