We continue looking at developments in issues on which we have worked over the years. This month it’s Genetically Modified (GM) food and Climate Change. The two issues are related. The push for GM food, driven by large corporations whose motivation is market domination, is now being promoted as a solution to food shortages caused by climate change. The Vatican and GM Food looks at how the Vatican continues to be pressured by the powerful GM lobby to endorse GM food. (read more)

Peace, Ecology and Justice
Pakistan does not produce sufficient power to provide electricity for all its peoples' needs. 'Load shedding' is a part of life, where electricity is cut off for hours, including the hot summer months. In such a context the discovery of massive amounts of coal under the sands of the Thar Parkar Desert, which has the potential to end load shedding and provide for all of Pakistan's energy needs for generations to come, is seen as a God send. But at what cost to the desert environment and its people today, and to future generations?

Reflection
We can do something and do it very well. Stories of and about widows abound in both the Old and New Testaments. In most cases they stand for the countless women who lived desperate lives, with little access to basic resources unless they had the good fortune to have some male relative who could provide for them. Support and power in society came through the male. (read more)

It is exciting to see that the message of Pope Francis’ Encyclical is being promulgated in a variety of places. (read more)
Take Action
We have two important actions this month: Write to the Government by November 5th about the regulation of new GM food technologies, and at the end of November join the Global Climate March nearest you prior to the Paris Summit. (read more)
