Earth Hour reminds us of the opportunity that exists, to help make a difference for Earth and all peoples by moving to sustainable ways of living.  During Earth Hour we are invited to switch off the lights and unplug, to show support for transitioning to renewable energy and living within Earth’s limits.  Earth Hour says, “Everyone has the power to Shape Our Future, and it’s never been more critical to harness that power than now.”

Lent is a time to help ground and refresh our purpose in belonging to and serving God’s mission.

Columban Fr Charles Rue in his resource Lenten Odyssey: Our Human Calling in Christ Jesus, says: “The scripture readings for the five Sundays of Lent keep reminding us of our amazing calling in Christ Jesus.  The readings speak of God actively present in creation and every human being, of life renewed and being transformed. Those baptised into Christ Jesus proclaim this truth. We are not aimless wanderers in this world; we are linked to the ongoing work God began at the dawn of creation.”  In his Lenten resource, Fr Charles links reflections and prayers with contemporary ecological insights.  He says: “Modern humanity has the knowledge and technology to begin creating a sustainable world.  Goals have been set by world leaders to help us achieve a fairer world. Faith communities are well placed to help deliver on these goals.”

Rising global temperatures as a result of climate change are being felt in devastating ways across the world.   During the course of this year decisions will be made on a global scale that will influence the shaping of priorities that can better support all life on Earth.  There is compelling evidence for committed and creative action that bring together ecological and social goals for humanity and all creation.  Faith communities have a vital role to play as bearers of hope and possibility.
