In this supplement to the March 2019 edition of Bridges, we provide the full text of A Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, which was co-signed by Pope Francis and Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb in Abu Dhabi on the 4th of February 2019.
This Document is historic. It is the first document co-authored by the Vatican and al-Azhar University. As such, it is authoritative for the followers of these two global religious institutions. The Document invites people of all faiths and all people of good will to promote human solidarity for peaceful co-existence. The authors “declare the adoption of a culture of dialogue as the path; mutual cooperation as the code of conduct; reciprocal understanding as the method and standard.” We offer this Document for your consideration, reflection and action.
The authors pledge “to convey this Document to authorities, influential leaders and persons of religion all over the world”. By publishing this special supplement to Bridges, we are assisting them in spreading the message. They further state, “Al-Azhar and the Catholic Church ask that this Document become the object of research and reflection in all schools, universities and institutes of formation.” Accordingly, we invite you to promote this teaching in your sphere of influence, be it church, mosque, work or social networks.
To our Muslim readers, we wish Ramadan Karim.
To our Christian readers, we wish a blessed Easter season.
To people of all faiths and people of goodwill everywhere, we wish “a universal peace that all can enjoy in this life.”
